Step onto a cold tile floor in January in New Jersey and you immediately understand the appeal of heated floors. But is it worth the extra cost? After installing radiant heat in hundreds of bathrooms across Monmouth and Ocean County, here's our honest take.
How It Works and What It Costs
Electric radiant floor heating uses thin heating cables or mats installed directly under the tile, on top of the substrate. The system is controlled by a thermostat, and most have programmable timers so the floor is warm when you wake up and off when you're at work. The tile acts as a thermal mass, holding and radiating the heat evenly across the surface.
For a typical master bathroom (50-80 square feet of heated floor), expect to pay $1,500-$3,000 installed. That includes the heating mat, thermostat, and the additional labor to install it properly under the tile. The running cost is minimal. Figure about $0.50-$1.00 per day for a bathroom-sized system running a few hours morning and evening.
Is It Worth It?
In New Jersey, yes. Our winters are long and cold. A heated bathroom floor turns a daily discomfort into a daily luxury, and it's one of those upgrades that every homeowner tells us they're glad they did. It also adds real value to your home, since heated floors are a selling point in the NJ real estate market.
The best time to add radiant heat is during a bathroom remodel when the floor is already being tiled. Retrofitting after the fact means tearing up existing tile, which doubles the cost. If you're already doing a bathroom renovation and debating heated floors, this is the time.
